It has been a bumpy ride, and we’re all feeling it. Did you overestimate your strength or underestimate the challenges put in front of you? It’s not important what happened, but what you learned. This month, we learn about the Seven of Swords – Learning the Hard Way.
The Seven of Swords has appeared in your path to slow you down, tell you to proceed with caution, and to make you aware that you may have missed a few crucial details. Yes, it can be a tricky card – it’s sneaky, mischievous, and enigmatic. And, to add a twist – came up reversed. So what do we learn? Let’s break it down.
Seven is tests, limitations, and the maturing process. In the tarot, Seven brings the message of hanging on, not giving up, and finding a way forward.
The Swords are about thought, logic, and strategic thinking. They are structure, organization, knowledge, and clarity. Experienced in real life as a tool or weapon, the Sword represents communication, which can mean curiosity, logic, reason, and fairness. It can also be conflict, aggression, bullying, or intimidation.
With a reputation of being cold and calculating, the entire Suit of Swords can be difficult. And… here we are, bumpy ride and all. What does this mean?
What’s With the Card Upsidedown?
Upright, the Seven of Swords is manipulative, deceptive, and dishonest, and this short-term thinking can be impulsive. What can you do if you find yourself in a situation like this? Do your homework. Focus on the details. If you are facing a conflict, a direct and aggressive approach is unlikely to work. Instead of being forceful, be clever. It’s time to think on your feet.
When a card is reversed its energy is not fully developed. It may be in its early stages or is losing power. It may be incomplete or unavailable. The qualities of the card are present, but they can’t be expressed completely.
Reversed, the Seven of Swords can point to a need to change your approach. Your current plan is not working. It can mean a victory won through cunning and trickery. A reversal can mean either a more extreme version of this (YIKES) or a complete reversal. Someone may decide to unburden themselves or come clean about a manipulation they have been involved in. Trust has been broken, but with this reversal, there is an opening for a new way forward.
A New Way Forward
In love, the Seven of Swords reversed says stop playing games. Tell the truth, or it will come out anyway. Not to mention that carrying the weight of this is heavy! In career, the Seven of Swords reversed, truths are coming to light. A situation at work may escalate. But those who are at fault may not be publically or fittingly outed. Their character will dictate their future. Other interpretations include ignoring warning signs, being outsmarted, or finding that your current plans are unworkable.

Questions to consider:
- What is the truth?
- Do you know what is causing you to feel conflicted?
- How are things out of balance?
- Name a few ways you can restore balance.
- What is being hidden?
- In what way are your limits being tested?
- What are you learning?
Have you noticed the Seven of Swords playing out in real life? While I do my best to keep politics and my opinion out of the conversation, staying silent and saying nothing at this crucial time is not an option. It’s up to me (and you). We must speak up for the things that matter to us or risk losing them. The number of things that fall under this umbrella has grown dramatically this year. Though participating in marches, attending protests, signing petitions, donating money, and writing postcards help, voting is where the power lies. Vote early (mail-in ballot) or at the polls on November 3rd, like your life depends on it.
The appearance of this card is your alert to pay attention this month. So be aware and expect tension, arguments, disagreements, or misunderstandings.
Be honest and upfront in all of your dealings. Find your backbone and your voice. Be cautious of relying too heavily on others. Your decisions are your responsibility. There’s so much learning here for us all.
Vote your conscience.
Ever upward,
P.S. Do you have clarity about your future or the direction that you’d like to go in? Are your personal relationships are being tested? Do you doubt yourself, your ability, or your strength? Maybe you want to bring some vibrancy back into your life? Being human can be messy and complicated, but you don’t have to navigate these big feelings on your own. This is your time, your time to acknowledge where you are in your life, and to ask for the support you need. I can help! Let’s talk about it.
