It’s October!
Each year a group of my college friends plan a gathering. Working out the logistics of our schedules, availability and real life obligations is not always easy, but as our excitement builds for our time together, it’s always worth it. As we adventured uptown, downtown and a bunch of places in between, we laughed (a lot!), shared personal stories and expressed gratitude (we have a yogi in our midst). On Sunday morning, I found myself down at the 9/11 Memorial. As a proud New Yorker, I sheepishly admit this was my first time beholding this powerful remembrance. With sadness and humility, it’s one I will not soon forget. Our cherished time together, not surprisingly, passed in a flash. Another one for the record books, my heart is full.
Family, friends, friends that are like family, you can choose your friends but you can’t choose your family – whichever way you see it, our card this month is the Ten of Pentacles.
Pentacles are the element of earth. They’re all about the material aspects of life including work, business, trade, property, money and other material belongings. The pentacles are about manifestation, prosperity, convention and permanence. Through the pentacles, we are able to see the real results of hard work and commitment in the world.
Ten’s are about completion, culmination and responsibilities. Ten’s are both the beginning and the end. The ten holds all of the stories and lessons of the ace through the ten. We are constantly passing through number ten stages in our lives. Some of these events are major such as a job ending, having a baby or moving to a new home. Others, the ten’s of our daily lives, are smaller such as finishing a task, signing a contract or playing in a soccer tournament.
Each cycle contains new experiences and lessons. These experiences are how we develop our gut instincts and feelings about things. A kind of ‘moral of the story’, if you will. Knowing what we now know, we can expect to be wiser, more confident and better prepared for what is to come next. Whether it’s in a personal relationship, a work situation or a family matter, learning from our mistakes is an essential part of the journey.
Ten of Pentacles is about tradition, security, wealth, stability, status and permanence. There is a strong family association. Family themes tie in with the cycle of life, things that are passed down, levels of maturity and the transfer of knowledge and/or material goods.
The Ten of Pentacles connects to family on many levels. Did you know that your home life is one of the most powerful influences in your life? The type of home, traditions, support and values you were brought up with greatly impact many, if not all of the decisions you make in your life today. Life is busy. It is too easy to *not* think of family often or simply take them for granted. This card appears to remind you that you have the opportunity to return these gestures of love and support. It is an excellent time to show up, show your gratitude and help out as needed.
When the card appears reversed, desired success has not been achieved. It can suggest someone who is very hungry for the reward but lacks the willingness to do the work required to get there. It could mean a lack of financial foundation and security. If this is the case, I would advise to watch carefully where and how you invest your money. It can also indicate living beyond your means. This person may be keeping up appearances while the truth is actually a mountain of unpaid bills, bounced checks and debt. In the realm of family, a reversal may indicate an upset in the work/life balance to the point where family and relationships are neglected or lost.

Questions to consider: What are you working hard to manifest? What makes you feel secure? How has your upbringing defined your actions? Who can you reach out to and connect with today? Are you living within your means? What is ending? What is beginning? What is your legacy? How will you be remembered?
The 10 of Pentacles is about permanence. Our legacy. What we leave behind.
It is about family and tradition.
It is about wealth. But, as you may know, wealth is not only about money.
The unit is stronger than the individual parts. The bond is unbreakable.
Fill your life with family, friends, culture, community involvement, traditions, celebrations and career path that fulfills you.
And, in return, they will do the same for you.
May you thrive.
