You could watch that glimmering ball drop and ring in the new year on January 1st. Still, as far as astrology is concerned, the new year starts on March 21st when the sun moves from the watery, sensitive, and dreamy 12th sign of Pisces to the fiery, bold, and intense sign of Aries.
Aries is the first astrological sign in the zodiac and is associated with spring cleaning and spring fever. It’s also when the earth begins to bloom, and it begins to stay lighter longer.
In astrology, each sign is assigned a modality (cardinal, fixed, or mutable) with basic energy. And, an element (fire, earth, air water). Each modality is paired with an element These combinations are the 12 signs of the zodiac that make up our year. Aries is the cardinal fire sign. Cardinal signs are initiators. They kick things off like Spring and the new year. Aries are ambitious, courageous, and fearless in taking the lead. They are also dynamic, fun, charismatic, and have a strong desire for victory. Strong as Aries’ are, they may struggle with following through once things get started. Hey, we all have our strong (and weak) points.
This time of year is especially exciting because we are kicking off the new astrological year and celebrating the arrival of Spring, aka Vernal Equinox. The equinoxes are the only time of year when the Northern and Southern Hemispheres have approximately equal amounts of daylight and nighttime. This happens twice a year, around March 21st and September 21st.
While you may not notice it immediately, Spring brings us more hours of daylight and warmer temperatures in the northern hemisphere.

- Journal your goals, intentions, and dreams
- Get outside
- Do some candle magic
