Eleven years ago, I was very pregnant with my first child. My due date was March 31st, but as that day came and went I found myself concerned that an April Fools delivery was a strong possibility. If I gave birth on April Fools Day, would that mean that my child’s birthday would be forever tied to a day of foolish pranks and jokes? Luckily, the universe stepped in and resolved the situation. I gave birth to my daughter,Jamie, on April 2nd, the same date as my husband’s birthday!
Today is April Fool’s Day. You may ask . . . What exactly does it mean to be The Fool?
Enter the card with the number zero!
The Fool is a bit enigmatic is its origin. Some translations of The Fool are not positive, saying that he would be more fittingly labeled “The Idiot”. But, others interpret him as a “Troubadour”, someone hired to entertain at the court of a king somewhere, a jester of sorts.
Being at the number zero, he has no past, only an infinite future. He does not have a specific placement in the order of the cards, he can be at the beginning or the end.
The Fool stands for each of us as we begin our journey. With his arms wide open and his head held high, he is ready to accept whatever comes his way. He is as oblivious to the edge of the cliff he stands on, as he is unaware of the adversity and challenges he will face as he goes out in the world. He is ready to go in any direction and he is open to all possibilities.
The message of The Fool is to fear nothing. He represents a carefree, relaxed and open attitude. He has the ability to live day by day without worrying about the future. The Fool embraces many child like qualities, which include trust and spontaneity. He is divinely guided and always protected.
You may notice The Fool is boldly dressed in bright clothing as he walks along on a treacherous mountain path. The vibrant colors reflect his enthusiasm and passion for the journey ahead. His worldly possessions are wrapped in a small sack tied to a stick which he holds with his right hand (the right is often thought of as conscious, extrovert, masculine) . He also gazes to the right, showing he is eager for action. In his left hand, (the left is often though of as referring to the subconscious, introvert, feminine) he holds a white rose, symbolizing his innocence. He gazes upwards, clearly in his own little world. The dog at his feet stands for the dangers – both past and future – that can be navigated if The Fool moves carefully and maintains the true essence of his nature.
The Fool has the desire to achieve goals, but, he must be careful to make the right choices. With The Fool’s influence, you are being given the abilities and tools to be able to break free from old routines and attachments.
Some questions to consider at this time: What new journey are you ready to start out on? How can you lighten your load? What is essential at this time and what can be left behind? What are you not paying attention to? What do you fear about starting this new adventure? Where do you need to stop being so practical? Is it time for you to shop for some colorful new clothes?
I commend your courage and determination. Reach out to share a story or seek support on your journey at dina@dinaberrin.com.

Until the next time. . . . .
