Hello February!
What a crazy winter we have had so far. I had booked a flight for a girls trip to Florida for January back in September. What is better than the warm sun when it is parka weather up north? My departure day was Friday 1/22. Who knew it would be the day before a massive snow storm was predicted to hit the north east. Would I get out? Would I get back? Though I did make it to the airport, I sadly did not make it to Florida. The airlines were discouraging travel. With my visions of a sunset cruise and relaxing yoga slipping out of reach, I began the trek back to NYC. My reality, almost 27 inches of snow and 2 days of running around in the snow with my kids. And, back to the calendar to plan a girls trip to Florida . . . minus the snow storm!
For many of us, the winter months are lacking the vibrant colors we associate with warmth (yellow and orange) and lush growth (green). Instead we are used to seeing a lot of brown and gray: Barren trees, overcast skies, and a sun that sets too early. How lucky for us that the lavish King of Pentacles is visiting with us this month and bringing some color and discipline with him!
Before we get into the card meaning, I want to bring two components of the card into the conversation. The rank of king and the element associated with the pentacle, earth.
First, the rank. What does it mean to be a king? Kings are very extroverted and worldly, they like to focus on getting things done out in the world.
The suit of Pentacles is the element of earth. Pentacles represent that which has value. This can be property, jewelry, your business or work, how your value yourself or some other material possession.
The King of Pentacles combines these two elements and with it his energy is enterprising, financially successful, reliable, goal and achievement oriented. He is stable and productive. He has worked hard to earn respect and the success that he wears like the colorful cloak shown on his card. This king is cautious and hard working. He can be slow to anger but when pushed, things can get explosive.
The symbol that jumps out at me is the bulls head. Did you notice there are 4 of them on his elaborate throne? The bull is the symbol of power, stability, force and strength. And, oh yeah, he can be stubborn, he is Taurus after all! The bull and Taurus in the King of Pentacles symbolizes resistance to change, inflexibility and tenacity.
Taurus is a security loving sign. The King of Pentacles is one of the most protected kings, with his armored boot, heavy cloak and the stone wall that stands behind him. He is not a risk taker or quick to make a decision. He protects his assets, willing to spend on things that he deems a wise investment.
Though the king may show up as a wise investor, accountant, banker or savvy businessman, he can also be someone of more modest means. His presence may be felt as a wise teacher, worldly traveler or master of a certain skill or trade. And, if nothing else, a friend or mentor that give us good advice about business or money.
The golden hue is so vibrant in this card, I would be remiss to not mention it. Yellow is the color of intelligence, awareness and clarity. Yellow indicates a strong intuition and positive outcomes. Yellow is our self confidence and helps cope with stressful situations.
Some questions: Where is your focus – what are you aware of more and more these days? What are you looking to create right now? Are you making well thought out decisions in your business? What needs to be protected? What is your relationship with your finances? Do you have something fun and colorful to wear as you prepare to go out and conquer the world?
With the King of Pentacles, it is time to look for growth (green) and clarity (yellow) as you move toward maintaining, managing and enjoying where you are right now. Be open to change and innovation, and don’t be afraid of a little hard work.
I wish you success.
