Hello September!
I must admit I have mixed feelings about welcoming in the month of September. If I had my way, I would order up another July and August from Mother Nature. Summer days are freedom, warmth and light. They are slow, easy and flexible. Well, sometimes.
One of my favorite things to do in summer is to escape the urban jungle. We drive out to the sticks of Pennsylvania to enjoy blue skies, lazy days at the lake and quiet nature trails to walk or bike on. Dinner is whatever we toss on the grill. We often finish the night using the smaller branches we picked up during the day to roast marshmallows.
Flash back to earlier this month (August), when we hosted a weekend of guests. To put it simply, I am not the most relaxed hostess. I worry about weather before, during and after the guests arrive. I make several trips to the store. I tend to overstock, making sure we have enough food and drink – both in variety and quantity. I make every bed and double check for extra pillows, blankets and towels. I clean the bathrooms and stock TP, sunblock, soap, etc. And then, I start planning activities. The only thing missing is my clipboard and whistle.
So, what happened with our guests? The weather was ideal. The biking, paddle boarding and beach time were super fun. When it came time for dinner I was ready to be the grill master. But, the grill would not turn on. The gas line was clogged. Then, it turned on, but the flame was barely visible. I started to sweat. Trying to control everything, I realized, some things were just not in my control. Luckily, I had great guests. They jumped in and we figured it out. And then, we all hopped in the car and went to the old fashioned ice cream shack down the road. Moose Tracks, anyone?
So, that happened.
Let’s connect this story to our card of the month, the Four of Pentacles.
In tarot, fours represent stability, order, structure, and completion. Pentacles signify the suit of earth, that which is tangible, reality, resources, money and practical skills.
The Four of Pentacles is ‘the builder’ who is all about solid foundations and hard work. This card can indicate the realization of one’s goals and tends to focus on materialism and building wealth and security.
For me, when the Four of Pentacles shows up, I see someone who is trying to micro-manage or cling to a situation. Being unable to let something or someone go, the figure is holding on to something whether it be money, a secret, control or a person.
As in life, sometime change is needed in order to see things from a new perspective. When you step back from a situation you are often able to see the big picture. Learning to do what you think is best for you and listening to you own advice can be eye opening.
This card highlights working hard to get the (financial) success that you desire. When the Four of Pentacles appears know that success is yours. You have built a solid financial structure which is strong and grounded for success.
Emotionally, the Four of Pentacles can describe someone who guards their heart. Our ambitious, security seeking, goal oriented planner is not one to take risks. Not wanting to let anyone in emotionally, they fill the time and space with work, money, and influence which they believe will bring them stability. They will not reveal their cards until you reveal yours. And if you do confess your feelings, they may not share theirs anyway.
The Four of Pentacles is a Stage Card. What this means and our four pentacles explained here:
‘Life is what happens while you are making other plans’ is a popular saying for good reason! I sure learned that lesson! Giving yourself permission to release the reins and seeing where it takes you may be the best gift you can give yourself. Better than adding another July and August, and maybe better than having ice cream for dinner. Although, that was unexpectedly good too!
How is the Four of Pentacles showing up in your life? Here are some questions to consider: Are you listening to you own advice? How are you trying to remain in control? What does having stability mean to you? How central of a role does money play in your life? Why? Do you allow others to see the real qualities you like most in yourself? In what way can you release control to allow more flow in your life? Is it time to walk away from the whistle and clipboard?
Fun fact I forgot to mention: Sometimes this card can just mean a hug. As in, someone wants to hug you, needs a hug or maybe you want to hug someone. With all that is happening in our world right now, how can this be wrong? I say, go for it!
