Welcome to April’s last blog in the Knight of Wands series, The Big Leap to Success. How has the Knight stirred things up for you this month? What are you aware of now that you weren’t before? Are you following your curiosity and learning new things? How have you adjusted your thinking?
Leap Before You Look
As the Knight of Wands—who’s prone to leaping before he looks in service of pursuing a greater adventure—we have all been known to make knee-jerk decisions only to find mixed results. What’s important is not the impulsive choices we make but what we do when in the position of needing to navigate our way out.
We often recognize that leaping before we look (only to find disappointment) can have a silver lining once we realize that it might not have been suitable for us. In short, we learn that what we thought we wanted isn’t always what we truly need.
This reminds me of an email I recently received from my former coaching client, “Liz.” Something that lights me up is hearing updates and changes (especially about our work) and celebrating my past and current clients’ wins!
Celebrating Current and Past Wins
A few years ago, Liz took a giant leap and accepted a job she believed would be a great next career step. Excited about moving in a new direction, she anticipated it would expose her to brand new challenges and fabulous learning opportunities. It didn’t take long before she realized her new job wasn’t what she’d expected. Between a highly demanding boss—with impossibly high expectations—and annoying office politics, the job became so tremendously stressful that the best she could hope for was to survive—never mind thrive!
From the excitement of the big leap to realizing she was in over her head, it all became a tough pill to swallow. Hard as it was, though, Liz kept moving. She protected herself by being a quick study and working diligently. By maintaining a traveler’s mindset she was able to focus on her purpose by planning for what might come next. Liz shared with me that she left this horrible job for an amazing new one. Now, she works with a wonderful new boss, using the skills and talents that let her shine—and she has time (and the bandwidth) to maintain a much healthier balanced lifestyle. Today, I celebrate Liz’s big win! 👏
Stay Authentic
You can celebrate, too, by taking the advice of the Knight of Wands to remain your authentic self and reflect on any over-the-top unrealistic expectations of the past. When you pursue something exciting—a new idea, partnership, move, job, etc.—try to surround yourself with good/kind people who have your back and help you plan.
Keep that traveler’s mindset—remember, it’s about moving forward—wear your armor and dress the part! And, in the end, you’ll lessen (and learn from) your disappointment and increase your success!
