Laughing with the Devil
The tarot deck, like life, is not always about rainbows and unicorns. That being said, even the cards that give people a feeling of discomfort and dread, do often have an upside, or at least something to consider.
When I turned over the Devil, I did what many of us do, I considered putting it back in the pile of cards and reshuffling. But, as you can see, I changed my mind. What is so scary about this guy anyway?
One of the things I try to bring to my postings is a different perspective. I could share the traditional meanings of the Devil and leave it at that. But, the Devil is so deep and complex, so packed with symbolism, I want to also show you a few of his other attributes.
So, let’s get the basics out of the way. Very often when the Devil shows up, it is about addictions (drugs, sex, food, name your poison), giving in to material temptations (shopping as therapy anyone?), obsessions and insecurities about ourselves. When representing a person, it can be either a man or woman who possesses money, power, control or is extremely persuasive, deceptive and/or hard to resist. When this card comes up it is time to look past the superficial, to go deeper, in searching for the answers and the truth.
Looking at the card, there is so much to see and interpret. Choosing just one thing to highlight, I find I am drawn to the fire, the flame. The flame is the symbol of illumination, and in this card indicates the ability to overcome. It is a symbol of hope.
Interesting, since the Devil is also about where we doubt ourselves. Where we feel we are not enough – smart enough, fast enough, tough enough, etc. The Devil shows up when we feel we have no options or that a choice is being made for us. The truth is, we all have options. Getting past the feeling of fear or lack of control is what is holding you back from leading a more optimistic and successful life. Know that it is in your control to free yourself.
The Devil is a major arcana card. One of the 22 title cards in the deck that tend to hold more weight and pack a big punch when they show up in a reading. When he shows up, we notice. Each of these cards has a function or attribute – and sometimes it is surprising. The function of the Devil is laughter. The Devil tells you to lighten up, not take life so seriously all the time. Life is to be enjoyed, it should be fun. We all lead such busy lives, sometimes we forget to find the humor in a situation.
The Devil is ruled by the astrological sign of Capricorn. This indicates someone with ambition, a strong sense of committment and resourcefulness.
So, what is the Devil really about? Being honest with yourself.
What do you desire? What gives you pleasure? What has power over you? What makes you feel powerful?
Isn’t it time to show the Devil that you have a sense of humor? I would love to hear how you are laughing with the Devil. Comments are welcome.
