Let’s keep talking about this month’s card, the Queen of Pentacles, and how you can incorporate her energy into your life right now. If you didn’t read last week’s post, Love and Values, check it out here.
Urgent, Important, or Neither
Most of us are familiar with the old adage of putting your own oxygen mask on first when the plane is going down, right? This act of caring for yourself first so that you’re ultimately more capable of taking care of others is right in line with the Queen of Pentacles’ thinking. Whether you’re juggling Zoom school, a sick family member, a big work project, or a personal disappointment, it’s so easy to fall to the bottom of your own priorities list. The Queen of Pentacles is a reminder to value yourself.
Dwight D. Eisenhower said, “What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important.” Read that again.
Let’s hash these two concepts out. The urgent matters are the ones that pop up, are unplanned, and crying for or demand your immediate attention. Important tasks are the ones that you’ve given thought, time, and attention to and that, once completed, add value to your life. This can relate to your relationships, career, family, finances, or personal achievements.
I should add, there’s also a third kind of task. The ones that are neither important nor urgent. They occupy our time but don’t add value to our work or personal lives, and no one is begging us to do them. Examples are scrolling on social media, watching reality TV, or shopping online for things you really don’t need.
How are you spending your valuable time? What is your attention focused on? The earthy and efficient Queen of Pentacles is done with saying yes to everyone and everything. She asks: What is one actionable step you can take to make your life easier? It’s ok to start with something small.
The important thing is to start.
This Queen has been planning her success since she was a young page. Learn all about it in the video below:
Take a Pause
As a coach, I’ve learned that people are naturally creative, resourceful, whole, and smart enough to figure it out for themselves. So, what do you do the next time you get an unexpected call from school to pick up your kid, a sick family member needs assistance, workmen in the apartment upstairs start drilling just as you’re getting to work, a delivery arrives that needs immediate attention?
Take that pause. Remember the Queen of Pentacles, ‘cause she’s got your back. When you do this successfully, you show yourself that you do matter, you do have worth, you are important!
