Here we are—the final message in this month’s series for Strength: Feel The Fear And Be Courageous Anyway. Maybe you tried my tarot coach approach from last week’s newsletter, which brought you new personal insights. If not, no worries—there’s plenty of time to get the hang of it as you go. This week, let me share a story about a client who found her way as she tapped into her inner strength and made a life-altering relationship move.
A Life-Altering Story
For years, Lisa has been living with her longtime partner Sam. His life is stable and steady, but he never seems interested in leveling himself up. He’s content with his less than challenging job and does the absolute minimum to get by, including in their relationship. He sticks to his routine and only does in the partnership what he’s always done. He doesn’t want to change anything.
Lisa, on the other hand, is more of a go-getter. In addition to her full-time job, she’s been making holistic beauty products. Recently, she decided to start selling them locally.
Always interested in progressing her learning, Lisa sets goals and accomplishes them. Focused on self-improvement and helping others, Lisa’s always interested in broadening her horizons, reading, traveling, and health pursuits. Sam, however, has no interest in any of this. When she invites him to join the fun, he almost always replies, “no thanks.”
In the bathtub one night, the stark realization hit her that they’re not a good match anymore. He doesn’t want to change, educate himself, or be better. Saddened but unwavering, she told him, “I don’t know if I want to be together anymore.” Sam’s response was to pack his bags and go.
Devastated at first, Lisa told me: “Now that I’m alone, I don’t know if I’ll ever find the right person for myself.” Even with her fears, she eventually accepts that this is the end of their relationship. And since Sam left earlier this year, Lisa has continued to excel.
When Sam reached out recently, he told Lisa he’d made a huge mistake, that he wanted to go to therapy with her, push past his years of resisting change, and be better together. “I’m not as brave as you—I took the easy way out and just left,” he admitted.
Standing in her values, Lisa found her courage. This gave her the strength to make changes, even though it’s scary to try new things. The option of not doing so felt so wrong, she says. Taking the approach of being gentle and saying, “ok, you don’t want to change,” opened a new door. Letting him go was a risk she was willing to take even though they’d been together for years.
Lisa courageously stood by herself and, without coercion, Sam realized his fear of change. Lisa handled her relationship with Sam with grace, buoyancy, and love. She has herself to thank for that.
