In my world—and maybe yours, too—what’s going on with the sun, moon, and other planets has become an increasingly hot topic. It’s not uncommon for clients, students, colleagues, or classmates to identify themselves by their Big Three—Your Sun, Moon, and Rising Signs. You may know your Big Three or need to know what I mean. That’s okay, too; we can work this out together. No matter where you fall on this spectrum, there’s always something new to learn.
The Big Three
Summer is the perfect time for exploring, so here is where we will start. Over the next three months, the final newsletter of each month relates to this topic. Keep an open mind, and who knows what you’ll learn about yourself! Before we jump into the deep end, it’s helpful to know some key terms and how they relate to the different signs. You’ve likely heard of the elements—they also exist in the tarot cards—but do you know what they mean?
❶ The elements all relate to the basic nature of each sign. There are four elements: Fire, Earth, Air, and Water.
❷ The modalities work with the element and show its expression. There are three modalities: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable.
❸ The 12 zodiac signs are very well organized, with the three modalities repeating in the same order – cardinal, fixed, mutable – and the four elements rotating in their same sequence – fire, earth, air, and water.
Here is their order, including their element and modality. Do you notice a pattern?
Sign—Modality—Element
♈️ Aries—Cardinal—Fire
♉️ Taurus—Fixed—Earth
♊️ Gemini—Mutable—Air
♋️ Cancer—Cardinal—Water
♌️ Leo—Fixed—Fire
♍️ Virgo—Mutable—Earth
♎️ Libra—Cardinal—Air
♏️ Scorpio—Fixed—Water
♐️ Sagittarius—Mutable—Fire
♑️ Capricorn—Cardinal—Earth
♒️ Aquarius—Fixed—Air
♓️ Pisces—Mutable—Water
To find your sun, moon, and rising, go to a birth chart calculator like this one https://horoscopes.astro-seek.com/birth-chart-horoscope-online. Then enter your exact time of birth (month, day, year, same time, and location). Next, for fun and to use as a reference next month, check out your Big Three. Finally, using the chart below, look at the characteristics of each.
What is surprising to you? Unexpected? Are they already known? What else? Feel free to share your observations – with me or in the comments. See something that finally explains a deeply held belief or personality trait? Soon (or maybe already), you’ll understand why those who know their Big Three are willing to share and discuss it.
Until the next time.
