Buh 🖐️ bye 2020, I’ll miss you – said no one ever!
In truth, 2020 was a mixed bag. It was a year of discomfort, grace, fear, and hope. And, it was the year we all woke up and began to think about what matters. And one thing was constant – the learning.
With its wicked sense of humor, my tarot deck was showing me that it was paying attention when it dealt me THE Teacher himself, The Hierophant, to carry us into 2021.

Right.
The Hierophant
For those who’ve never heard this word used in a modern sentence, the Hierophant can be a tricky and sometimes confusing card. Let me fill you in.
First, here’s a brief story: The Hierophant is linked to Chiron’s story in Greek Mythology (see Mythic Tarot card image to the left). Chiron was an immortal centaur, known for his fierce wisdom and healing ability. He was shot with a poison arrow by Hercules. The arrow didn’t kill him, but he spent the rest of his days in constant pain. He was a healer to others but unable to heal himself. He became known as the Wounded Healer. His story lives on in the Hierophant. His wound offers knowledge that pushes towards growth that could not happen otherwise.
Knowing this, let’s flesh him out a bit further.
The Hierophant is an old word that means Revealer of Sacred Things. While he looks like a pope, cardinal, or another religious leader, he represents authority, knowledge, and wisdom. He’s wise, persuasive, and fiercely intelligent. The Hierophant serves as the connecting link between your inner illumination and your outer experiences. A diplomat, a savant, a father figure, and your greatest ally – he represents traditions, stability, protection, and guidance. His protection will take you anywhere.
The Hierophant is the Major Arcana card number five. In tarot, The Fives typically represent conflict. The moment we are put to the test and forced to struggle with what’s in front of us. The Fives show us how unavoidable (and sometimes) necessary challenges are to move us forward to the next stage of our journey. Fives can also be chaotic, unpredictable, constantly changing, and destabilizing – the exact opposite of what the Hierophant stands for. And, here lies the lesson of this card.
When the Hierophant shows up, a life lesson is ready to be shown.
A change has (or is about to) come to teach growth, (spiritual) awareness, self-love, or self-esteem. Healing, another key Hierophant trait, is also available.
Whatever is going on in your life, The Hierophant is here to teach you to be more than what you are at this moment.
The Hierophant is all about “doing the right thing.” You may be struggling with an issue and unsure what is the “right” thing for you. This card reminds you that the answers are within you. The “right” thing is that choice that is right for you.
