Mention The Lovers card and it brings up visions of Cupid, romance, soul mates, and falling in love. Love is magical ❤️. And who doesn’t love a happy ending?
The Tarot’s Lovers has a story and it may surprise you. The card goes deep and can sometimes be more Romeo and Juliet than a fairy tale. Are you curious? Let’s take a look at the Lovers card through the lens of one of my all-time favorites, Grease!
Spoiler Alert ❗ if you haven’t seen the movie or show (What?? Go watch it right now and then email me at Dina@DinaBerrin.com), I’m sharing a few plot twists here, but don’t worry because there are still lots of juicy bits left out!
Opposites, Relationships, and Decisions, Oh My!
In the movie, the main characters, Danny and Sandy, have a perfect summer romance at the beach. At the end of summer, they say goodbye and return to their “normal” lives. Only, Sandy doesn’t. She unexpectedly shows up as a new student at the same high school as Danny. So once they realize they’re at school together the reality of their “Summer Lovin” is like a bandaid that has suddenly been ripped off. Can Sandy and Danny figure out a way to make this relationship work? Fast forward to the final scene of the movie where Sandy completely transforms herself—to the surprise of everyone—Danny included. Quick guilty pleasure, check out You’re The One That I Want. The movie wraps up soon after this scene showing them in a magical car that launches into the sky as if to say . . . and they lived happily ever after.
The Lovers, like Grease, is about relationships, the coming together of opposites, and decisions. It’s also a deep understanding of people and their motivations. Your relationships reflect your personal values. Values including freedom, self-worth, and finding a balance integrating all of the parts of yourself. Also, The Lovers can indicate marriage or it can suggest that this relationship has run its course and it’s now time to part ways.
The message here is that your most important relationship is the one you have with yourself. So learn to love yourself and watch everything else fall into place. Release the fear and guilt that you’ve been carrying with you. It’s no longer needed.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
As I mentioned in the above video, the Lovers card is associated with the astrological sign of Gemini, which is the sign of the twins. Because of the dual nature of Gemini, one of the challenges is to learn how to decide. We’re all faced with decisions.
Recently, I found myself in a position where I needed to make a work-related decision. After an initial conversation and deciding to move forward, a new client backtracked and asked to alter our original agreement. Unsure how I felt about the new conditions, I asked for clarity and some flexibility. The client was clear that there was no flexibility which brought the choice back to me. Feeling a bit stuck, I created these clarifying questions:
- What is important (to me) about working with this client?
- How does working with this client honor my values?
- What is the benefit of accepting these new accommodations?
Here are some questions that you can ask yourself:
- What is important to me?
- What are my highest personal values?
- How do I show up in my relationships?
- In what ways have I grown from lessons learned in my relationships?
- What relationships in my life do I need to re-examine?
- Am I on the verge of a new relationship but worried about the challenges that might go along with it?
- How can I go in with my eyes open?
