Hello May and welcome new subscribers!
Until recently, maintaining a regular meditation practice has been more loose thread than anchor stitch in the fabric of my life. It was present but not consistently woven in. Working closely with clients looking for insight, clarity and peace in their lives fired up some questions of my own. While the cards are an excellent tool to start the conversation, the real answers and aha’s lie within us.
This past fall, while listening to myself, I signed up for a class about public speaking. I know that might sound crazy to some. Studies show that many people fear public speaking more than they fear death. By late fall and early winter, my curiosity about speaking increased. And, by the end of the class, I decided to pursue it a bit further. This past month, I gave my first speech. I felt the fear, but I did it anyway.
My topic: Transition.
Many moons ago, I was interested and curious about a different topic. I found a class. You might be interested to know the subject of that class. It was tarot.
Here’s a picture of me speaking in April.
Within the 78 cards of the tarot deck lies a card that everyone knows is there, but few hope to see. Fearful or with nervous energy, some will mention this card by name, as in: Is there one of those cards in your deck? Or, what will we/you/I say if it shows up?
It is one of the most misunderstood cards in the tarot deck.
It’s the Death card.
I feel it is important to lead with the fact that the Death card does NOT represent actual physical death. The most common meanings associated with this card are profound change, transformation and new beginnings. Death releases what is no longer serving us, ushering us to the next phase or chapter.
Death is ruled by Scorpio, one of the most powerful signs of the zodiac. Scorpio digs deep, solves mysteries and builds wealth. It governs psychology, metaphysics and magic. Scorpio is fascinated by what is underneath the surface, preferring the shadows and that which people avoid or hide.
Scorpio is ruled by the planet Pluto. Pluto is the planet of transformation, rebirth and regeneration. Pluto has a very intense energy that can hit you like a ton of bricks. With this energy, your whole life can be turned upside down, and when it is done you may find you have a whole new set of ideas and goals. When aspects are less than ideal, this energy can turn to power abuse, addiction, violence and unexpected events we have not planned for.
Death can be intense and heavy, but wouldn’t you be as well if you were hanging out with Scorpio and Pluto all the time?
In truth, we have been going through mini Death experiences in our lives since the umbilical cord has been cut. From being weaned from a pacifier/breast, to sleeping in your own bed, starting school, graduation, leaving home, heartbreak (OK, this may feel like physical death), relationships beginning/ending, building a home, marriage, parenthood, divorce, career changes and retirement. Life transitions are all Death experiences.
Death is neither good nor bad. Death, like everything else, is given meaning by our own perception. Events that appear to be tragic, overwhelming or just about the worst thing we can imagine may not be the case once we have made our way through the experience. Divorce can be terrible, but what if in the end both partners lives are greatly improved by the separation. Or, losing your job can make you feel abandoned and rejected, but, what if the new direction these feelings send you in paves the way to a whole new career. Death can be liberating!
Death is crystal clear in its function and actions and can be territorial, authoritative and unyielding. When not working at is highest level, Death can be vicious and cruel, full of false claims and empty promises. Death does what he wants with no fear of any consequences.
The timing of the Death card corresponds to the timing of Scorpio, which is October 23rd through November 21st. You can think back to that window of time in 2017. What was happening for you at that time?

Some questions to consider or meditate on this month: When has the loss of something created a space for transformation and growth? What do you no longer need but are afraid to let go? Is there an area of your life in need of change? What relationship needs to end? Where is the sun shining through for you? Where do you need to get moving? How are you unstoppable?
This is a time of change.
It is time for something new, fresh or different to come into our lives. What are you curious about?
Tuning in, listening and learning what truly matters to you will help you move forward into something new, fresh and revolutionary!
Give up an old habit. Close one door to open another. Change your status. Sign up for a class.
Be in this powerful moment.
