I’m excited to present this month’s series on the Two of Cups. Why? Because the Two of Cups is known as the Lord of Love. This optimistic, promising, “feel good” card represents a favorite topic: Relationship!
A quick glance at the card shows a magnetic-looking couple—a beautiful woman and a dynamic man, each beautifully dressed. She wears a laurel wreath, representing victory, in her hair; he’s sporting a crown of red roses reflecting passion.
Opposites Attract
This relationship looks like it’s off to a good start, and the message here is BIG things are possible when the energy is right.
The Two of Cups represents attraction, harmony, passion, union, support, trust, deep friendship, and mutual affection. It’s romance, a love affair, engagement, marriage, and/or a prosperous business partnership.
What paints this positive picture? For starters, it’s not a codependent relationship. The woman doesn’t need rescuing or fixing—she doesn’t ask to drink from his cup because she doesn’t have one of her own. As for him, the man doesn’t need to prove himself to her by galloping in on a white horse to save her. He’s not her hero or main source of survival.
Instead, what we see is two independent adults, willing to share their cups with each other. Since each of their cups is full, they’re bringing their whole, true, authentic, selves—along with their own life experience—to this meeting.
Above the man and woman is Caduceus of Hermes, the Greek messenger god. This symbol of both magic and alchemy—topped by a winged lion—represents strength, passion, and courage. Two serpents surround this staff of Hermes and spiral upward, relaying a message of balanced duality.
This equilibrium is the result of joining two opposing qualities—here the feminine and masculine—into one peaceful entity. True intimacy involves a lot of time and work, and the Two of Cups is the beginning of this process.
Rolling hills and a small, sweet house is in the background. The distance between the couple and the house indicates that this relationship is in its early stages. The house signifies structure, peace, stability, and that home where your heart is.
Two Heads are Better Than One
In tarot, the number two represents balance, cooperation, diplomacy, and negotiation. Often, it indicates deciding between your head (masculine) and your heart (feminine). However, two different approaches or mindsets can take matters in opposite directions and make things more complicated.
When the two card is involved, you’re advised to listen to both sides of an argument and be prepared to hear what both have to say, which can change the dynamics of a situation.
The Two of Cups asks: Why work in opposition when you can come together and form a more complete unit? It’s been said that two heads are better than one! With the Two of Cups, the couple works in harmony with each other to reach a higher goal which illustrates the beauty and power created when two people come together.
Here are some questions to consider until next week:
- Where do you find harmony in your relationships?
- Are your partnerships give and take?
- Does each person add equal value and, if so, how?
