As you prepare to kick off your shoes and enjoy the fun and fireworks of the July 4 holiday weekend, let’s catch this month’s vibe with July’s card, the Two of Wands.
Here we find a figure standing behind the security of a low wall, holding a small globe in one hand, propping a wand on the wall with his other hand while a second wand remains bolted to the wall behind him. The globe the figure holds in his right hand represents both his personal world—one so small it fits in the palm of his hand—and the outer one, indicating that the great big world is just out of his reach.
He stares at the globe as if trying to elicit from it something meaningful and exciting. When he looks out into the distance, caught up in thought, a bit oblivious to the world around him, the scene brings to (my) mind a song by a band called The Clash released in the summer of 1982 called “Should I Stay or Should I Go?” Some of you will remember it but if not, it’s a powerful song about indecision, restlessness, and passion. Interestingly, all these words describe the Two of Wands since wands represent fire. They’re also about action, creativity, determination, strength, passion, and inspiration.
Decisions
When the Two of Wands appears it tells you an important choice is coming where you’ll decide if should you stay with the comfort of the past or heed that inner call to go in search of a new adventure. It’s possible the necessity for decision-making may occur suddenly and unexpectedly; however, it’s also possible that thoughts of adventure have been brewing internally for a while.
While the Two of Wands represents action, it’s also about balance, choice, and togetherness. Like all tarot “two” cards, it’s the number that indicates a potential conflict and that a decision needs to be made—one on which you must act because there’s no room for compromise or a middle way.
The two wands in the card symbolize the conflict: one is free to move about; the other remains pinned to the wall. As the man in the card mulls over his thoughts, ideas, and desired actions, he’s torn between remaining in the same safe place or making a potentially risky but adventurous change.
At the same time, the Two of Wands also represents accomplishment, opportunity, and risk. It asks the question: Are you ready to utilize your creativity as the spark that helps you choose a new path? Every day, you decide who you want to be in the world. You underscore this decision with your actions and how you show up. The Two of Wands asks you now: Who do you want to be in order to create the life you desire?
You might ask yourself now:
- What opportunities are available to me now?
- Where do my passions lie?
- What do I risk by staying put versus what are the potential rewards of trying something new?
Only you can decide by using your intuition and creative ability to imagine something different!
