Chinese Astrology v. Western Astrology
- Chinese: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
- Western: Ram, Bull, Twins, Crab, Lion, Virgin, Scales, Scorpion, Archer, Sea-Goat, Water Bearer, and Fish.
Origins of the Signs
In Chinese astrology, the myth says that the twelve signs are chosen when God, developing a calendar, invites all creatures to participate in a race. The first twelve creatures to cross the finish line are chosen for the signs.
Now, Western astrology uses constellation positions and Greek mythology.
Here are five elements of Chinese astrology:
- Fire signs are inspired by excitement,
- Earth signs are motivated to secure foundations,
- Metal signs are driven to create order,
- Water signs are compelled to form emotional bonds,
- Wood signs have the desire to explore.
In Chinese astrology, the signs switch years until all 12 have had their year. A new element is in play every time that animal year comes up until all five elements have cycled through. Then, it starts all over again. This means it takes 60 years to get through all twelve signs and elements.
Western astrology has four elements, and each sign has one associated element.
- Water signs are driven by emotion,
- Earth signs are practical,
- Fire signs are impulsive,
- Air signs are intellectually oriented.
Unpacking the Water Rabbit Year
The Rabbit is psychic, intuitive, sensitive, and creative. Caring about others and deeply feeling the world’s pain, they love mysteries, hidden knowledge, and seek the truth. Plus, the Rabbit likes to know. It’s a great keeper of secrets, is well-spoken, and has a great sense of style.
When you add water, you have double the intuition and sensitivity that can be seen taking on the troubles of others and getting bogged down by the struggle. The Water Rabbit can be fearful and withdrawn and may need a little pep talk now and again.
As we move into the Year of the Water Rabbit, let’s embrace the energies of patience, intuition, and good luck. Trust your inner wisdom and take things one step at a time. And with a little bit of the Rabbit’s gentle determination and the flow of water, we can accomplish great things in 2023!
