Introducing the King of Cups
He is the king of emotion, the king of feeling, and the king of emotional restraint! The King of Cups is composed, diplomatic, wise, and knows how to achieve a goal through subtle influence. He is action-oriented, extroverted, and worldly. The king’s focus is on getting things done. And, he does.
The King of Cups is the metaphorical manager. He is responsible for fielding complaints from employees or customers – while keeping his feelings in check. His natural empathy makes him a great therapist, counselor, caregiver, or religious leader. He’s trustworthy, discreet, and not easily manipulated.
Emotions are Complicated
For this king, emotions are complicated. From his perspective, once a king takes on the duty to rule, emotions can conflict with responsibility. For this reason, he’s cautious about sharing his feelings. He has mastered the art of speaking about his feelings without actually showing them. Emotional control makes him an anchor of stability for those in need of a calm, skilled listener. And at the same time, for those who want/have a closer relationship with him, this trait can be maddening.
There are times that call for us to put our feelings aside, think clearly, and act decisively. This king puts his feelings aside for the greater good of his kingdom. But the downside is that while he’s great at helping others through difficult times, he finds it difficult or is simply unable to ask for support. Maybe that’s because no one could ever understand the tremendous emotional intensity that he hides beneath his kingly exterior. It makes you wonder, who is his King of Cups??

The King of Cups Shows Up in Many Different Ways
He has shown up for me during these last few (unusual) months, which have been full of change and uncertainty. I have felt emotional and unsure. As a parent, there are things that my children have the come to expect from me, such as consistency, reliability, honesty, encouragement, dinner, etc. Every day, they rely on me to be composed, stable, and responsible. Even if I’m feeling low on patience, understanding, and compassion on a given day, their expectations remain the same. Regardless of what happened at work, while shopping at the market, on a phone call, or in a personal relationship, it is my job to provide protection and stability for my kids. The King of Cups has modeled the ability to control his emotions and even put them on a back burner when necessary. And sometimes, it’s necessary!
Ask yourself:
❔ What emotion is here?
❔ Am I choosing to lead? How?
❔ How can I take action?
❔ Am I holding back?
❔ How can I use diplomacy?
❔ The best way I can help is______.
❔ What is possible if I allow others to support me?
❔ Am I truly listening to what is being said?
❔ What is my secret?
❔ My intuition tells me ______.
The King of Cups is intuitive, compassionate, and sensitive to others. He asks you to take the kinds of actions he might, such as to respond calmly in a crisis, use diplomacy rather than force, reach out to help, and accept a different point of view.
Make the world a better place for all through tolerance and compassion. Take nothing for granted, not even yourself.
Ever upward!
